An Exercise in Empathy

While visiting the Stedelijk Museum I walked into Jordan Wolfson’s MANIC/LOVE piece. The first thing that got me was the roar from the heavy chains pulling back and forth. Then I noticed the huge puppet—with the twitching eyes—being dragged and dropped every which way. Finally I felt a strange unease in my stomach. I had to go: I could not watch any more.

  1. Wow, this looks intense. Was there any music, except the chain noises?

Yes, there was different kinds of music that started and stopped at seemingly random moments. This added to the sense of discomfort.
