Just Strolling
Friday, 12 May 2017: 15.21 - 16.08
While visiting my sister in Abuja, My son and I went off for an afternoon stroll. We had no specific plans other than not to walk too far because of the heat.
By the way, the colour shifts between photographs has to do with the use of a polarising filter and the various angles between the camera lens and the sun.
The landscape is dotted with unfinished houses such as this one.
The printer/copy shop on the left gets the better of an inconsistent power supply through the use of solar panels. There’s so much ‘free’ sun, it’s a bit odd not to see more of them. I’m sure there’s a good reason for that.
Old and new often live together in colourful harmony.
That unfinished mansion again. It does have a certain sad spookiness about it.
Nigeria is a land of contrast: It’s also a place where very different things come together unexpectedly. Cows, zinc-roofed shacks, and huge villas appear to live and let live.
Advertising one’s services can be done by spraying relevant info onto vertical services, as seen on the left side of this wall.
Like us, these young cows were out on an afternoon stroll.
See those people way off in the distance… that’s where we were 25 minutes ago.
Here’s a glimpse over the rooftops. The highway bridge in the middle of the picture is where we made one of last weeks time lapse film clips.
This little dog barked and growled a bit, but generally kept out of our way.
Over there in the distance is the city centre. We’ve driven through on many an occasion, but have never stopped to look around. Something we’ll definitely do during our last week…
Again that joyful blend of differences. That’s a carpenter shop in the foreground.
Generally speaking, high roofs are the way to go in these parts.
The residents living between these antenna arrays quite possibly enjoyed some pretty freaky radio and television reception.
Another look towards the centre of town…
There are always lots of little bits and pieces to catch the eye.
Suburbia, Abuja-style. Three fowl wander around looking for lunch snacks: Real free range, anyone?. I suppose this is what is really meant by ‘free range’.
Some ‘family’ houses, like the one on the left, are rather voluminous!
And then this… That dark and ominous grey is not a computer effect: it’s fast approaching rain.
…And just like that, the sun said something like: “Er… guys I gotta go. See ya later, and good luck!” Take a good look at those clouds and I’m sure you’ll understand why the sun ran away.
Good weather on the left, heavy weather on the right.
Take a good look at those clouds: I’m sure you’ll understand why the sun ran away.
An ‘artistic’ study in gold, green, and grey — not 😜
A man’s garments are blown one way and then the other by the pre-rain winds.
And then this… That dark and ominous grey is not a computer effect: it’s fast approaching rain.
One last shot before the rain caught us. We arrived home thoroughly drenched, and very happy 😊
